JOB TITLE: Police Dispatch

REPORTS TO: Police Chief

FLSA STATUS: Full-Time

 

JOB SUMMARY

To provide responsible and complex staff assistance to the Police Chief and Police Sergeants.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide staff assistance to the Police Chief and Police Sergeants; prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence.  Monitor airport security; respond to alarms in the computerized security and fire alarm systems; provide an analysis of any problems or anomalies within the security system hardware and/or software. Monitor closed circuit television cameras for the airport security surveillance system. Prepare reports on events that occur; activities performed and unusual incidents observed.  Answer alert phone and make appropriate radio and phone calls for response to potential or actual aircraft emergency.  Answer radio calls and complaints involving automobile accidents, misdemeanors, felonies and disturbances. 

Coordinate information between police officers and other outside agencies with telephone and radio.  Issue, collect, revoke and destroy returned ramp identification badges of personnel terminated, transferred or reassigned to an area or job which no longer requires badging. Maintain an accurate radio log.  Respond to citizen complaints and requests for information. Perform other job related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

Computer applications and use of computers for work processing, spreadsheets and data base.  Operational characteristics, services and activities of an airport law enforcement and security program.  Computer applications as they relate to automated security cameras and access control. Principles and practices of law enforcement and emergency response dispatch procedures. Principles of training and performance evaluation.  Pertinent Federal and local laws and ordinances, particularly with reference to airport and airline security and records maintenance.  Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in emergency situations. Coordinate several lines of communication with appropriate agencies simultaneously. Interpret and explain Airport Authority policies and procedures.  Prepare clear and concise records and reports.  Analyze problems, identify alternate solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals.  Analyze situations quickly and objectively, and determine proper course of action.  Use good judgment in emergency or hazardous situations.  May be subject to irregular hours, including weekends, holidays and midnight shifts.  Meet and deal with the public tactfully and effectively.  Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.  Maintain mental capacity which allows the capabilities to:  exercise sound judgment and rational thinking in emergency situations; evaluate various options and alternatives and choose an appropriate and reasonable course of action. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. 

Minimum Training and Experience

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:  Two years’ experience as a police, fire or 911 dispatcher, or experience in a military command post or similar military environment, or two years as a police or security officer with experience controlling and/or monitoring a similar array of sophisticated security equipment, or proficiency working with computer software in DOS applications, dBase, and Lotus, and two or more years working with the public or related areas .  Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Additional training in computer software applications is highly desirable. Police science, law enforcement, criminal justice or training in related fields is desirable.

Must be able to adapt to changing work environments.
