JOB TITLE: Police Officer I

REPORTS TO: Police Sergeant

FLSA STATUS: Full-Time

JOB SUMMARY

Perform a variety of duties in the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes to ensure the security of the airport; to enforce airport traffic regulations; to perform lead supervisory functions during assigned shifts; and to perform a variety of tasks in support of airport safety and security.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Patrol a designated area of the airport to preserve law and order, discover and prevent the commission of crimes, and enforce traffic and other laws and ordinances. Perform security checks and inspect buildings, facilities, grounds and other areas including gates and fencing to prevent trespass and ensure airport security. Respond to accident scenes and emergencies; administer first aid as necessary.  Participate in traffic control activities for the airport; direct traffic to ease loading and unloading of passengers and luggage.  Assist in conducting security checks for all passengers at screening points on a regular basis.  Enforce traffic laws and ordinances; patrol parking lot; issue warnings and citations. May be designated to lead a special detail for a specific requirement such as flight line security, traffic control or similar task related objective.  Deal with upset, angry, intoxicated, or violent persons; respond in appropriate manner; make arrests as necessary; prepare reports on arrests made, activities performed and unusual incidents observed.  Maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems; preserve good relationships with the general public and airport tenants. Escort people through the terminal area as requested. May monitor airport terminal activity on closed circuit television cameras. Assist in conducting training programs on the various phases of police activities at the airport. Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to law enforcement and security activities. Communicate effectively with Air Traffic Control. Perform runway sweeps.  Keep runways and taxiways free from debris.  Respond to aircraft emergency.  Perform other job related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED


Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

Public safety methods and procedures including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, investigation and identification techniques. Criminal law and criminal procedure with particular reference to the apprehension, arrest and custody of persons committing misdemeanors and felonies. Rules of evidence pertaining to the seizure and preservation of evidence. Principles of supervision, training and performance rating criteria. General standardize law enforcement equipment. First aid principles, practices and techniques. Self-defense tactics.


Ability to communicate effective on police and aircraft radios. Observe accurately and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents and places. Use and properly care for firearms. Coordinate the work of other sworn personnel. Understand, interpret and apply laws, regulations, policies and procedures.  Prepare clear, accurate and grammatically correct written reports.  Analyze situations quickly and objectively to determine and take emergency action. Identify potential crime situations or traffic hazards and take preventive action.  Teach the operation of standard equipment and resources required in the performance of assigned tasks. Use good judgment in emergency or hazardous situations. Work irregular hours including weekends and holidays.

Safely navigate a vehicle in an aviation environment, including aircraft parking ramp, taxiways, and runways. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Minimum Training and Experience

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:  one year of previous law enforcement experience as a sworn police officer.

High school diploma or GED is required.  In addition to possession of a valid high school diploma or GED certificate, the BAT is required of all applicants except those applicants who are already APOSTC certified and who are required to complete the Refresher training for reinstatement of their Certification, or, those applicants possessing an earned Associate’s Degree or higher Degree from a College or University accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), or its regional equivalent.  Additional training in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice or related fields is desirable.

Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Alabama driver's license and be insurable.  Possession of Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer issued by the Alabama Peace Officer's Standards and Training Commission.

Physical Requirements

Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties which may include the following:

  • effecting arrests
  • subduing resisting individuals
  • running, walking, crouching, or crawling
  • operating assigned equipment and vehicles
  • performing life-saving and rescue procedures

Maintain mental capacity which allows the capabilities to:

  • exercise sound judgment and rational thinking in emergency or dangerous situations
  • evaluate various options and alternatives and choose an appropriate and reasonable course of action

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
