Honoring the Life and Legacy of Matthew S. Metcalfe

MOBILE, Ala. (October 15, 2025) —The Mobile Airport Authority honors the life and legacy of Matthew S. Metcalfe, whose decades of leadership and passion for aviation helped define the organization and shape the future of Mobile’s airports today.

Mr. Metcalfe’s service to the Mobile Airport Authority began at its inception in the late 1970s and continued for more than 35 years until his retirement in 2013. He served in many roles during his tenure, including sixteen years as Chairman of the Board. His dedication and steady leadership guided the Authority through pivotal moments in history, including the construction of the M.C. Farmer Terminal at Mobile Regional Airport in 1986, the expansion of the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley, and the early groundwork that helped bring Airbus to Mobile.

In 2015, the concourse at Mobile Regional Airport was named the Matthew S. Metcalfe Concourse in recognition of his extraordinary service and commitment.

“Matthew Metcalfe’s leadership and vision helped lay the foundation for what the Mobile Airport Authority is today. His work has left a permanent mark on this community, and we are grateful for his extraordinary contributions and extend our deepest condolences to his family,” said Andy Wilson, Executive Director of the Mobile Airport Authority.

E. Luckett Robinson, Chairman of the Mobile Airport Authority Board of Directors, added, “Mr. Metcalfe was instrumental in the construction of the existing terminal and the early revitalization of Brookley. The Mobile Airport Authority could not be successful without a long history of exceptional leaders, and we were fortunate that Mr. Metcalfe contributed his time and obvious talents to our organization.”

The Mobile Airport Authority extends its deepest condolences to the Metcalfe family and joins the community in celebrating a life that left an enduring mark on our airports and our city.
