First Structural Steel Beam Set at Mobile International Airport

MOBILE, Ala. (May 2, 2024) –  The Mobile Airport Authority proudly announces a significant development in the construction of the Mobile International Airport (BFM) Terminal and Parking Garage Project. On Thursday, construction crews successfully erected the first steel beam.

“This milestone marks a critical phase of construction, as vertical development makes the project visibly progress,” said Chris Curry, Mobile Airport Authority President. “Seeing the structure rise from the ground is a promising sign for our community that this project is really moving forward.”

Construction on this project started about 18 months ago. Since then, tenants have been relocated, a creek has been enclosed on-site, a wash rack moved, along with some utility work.

The new terminal and parking garage are scheduled to open in November 2025. With this opening, all commercial air service will shift from Mobile Regional Airport (MOB) to Mobile International Airport, conveniently located just minutes from downtown Mobile and Baldwin County.

“This project is transformational not only for Mobile but for Baldwin County as well,” stated Curry. “It will allow us to relocate commercial service and take advantage of our local infrastructure—highways, rail, the port, and waterways. This will make travel more convenient for the entire region’s customer base.”

The terminal will feature five gates, four domestic and one international swing gate, with the capability to expand to 12 gates as demand increases. The parking garage will offer 1,250 spaces. Additionally, the existing low-cost terminal will continue to operate with two gates upon the opening of the new terminal for added capacity on day one.

Curry added, “Another important element about this terminal is its international capability, including a Federal Inspection Service (FIS) that will enable us to process both passengers and cargo—vital components of our business. Ultimately, where we see ourselves in another couple of years is to be able to link this terminal with the port of Mobile, enhancing our multi-modal system in Mobile.”
